Man got 146 visas cleared on forged papers, held

New Delhi: It was not very difficult for Anil Kumar to get 146 visas cleared by the Spanish Embassy. He hoodwinked the embassy by simply “posing as an enterprising frontman of Hero Cycles and telling them that the company is taking its star dealers on an incentive trip abroad”.
Kumar, however, could not pull off the fraud for more than six months. He is behind bars now, after an alert sounded by the staffers of Russian airlines Aeroflot. They called up the embassy to cross-check the “rather suspicious” antecedents of the 146 Indians en route to Russia on Spanish visa.
The alert call, police said, has unearthed an elaborate scam played by the dubious “Hero Cycles” staffer who used fake income tax documents and letterheads of the private limited company to get the visas cleared.
Arrested on Wednesday night from the IGI Airport when he was on his way back from Hong Kong, Kumar was produced in court on Thursday. Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Kamini Lau remanded him to five days’ police custody. The police said Kumar may prove to be a vital link in a human trafficking racket and they intend to take him to Rajasthan, Haryana and Punjab as most of his “clients” belong to these states.
