The Mumbai airport, which has two passenger terminals since its inception, could see one of them done away with and instead a single terminal would cater the entire air traffic.
The existing international terminal would be modified into a modern structure catering to international and domestic air traffic.
As per a recent plan submitted to the central government, the Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL) has proposed the creation of a single terminal for all air passenger traffic in the city, doing away with passenger services at the terminal in the north west suburb of Santacruz.
Talks with various parties like airline Indian and other government agencies which have land near the existing international terminal at Sahar in north west Mumbai are on, a MIAL spokesperson said.
The terminal buildings at Santacruz (1A and 1B) will continue to stand though they could be used for other purposes like cargo traffic handling, he added.
MIAL is expected to reopen the arrival lounge in the 1B terminal this month and will begin modifications on the 1A building later this year.
The construction of the new terminal at Sahar is also expected to begin by the end of this year.
