New Delhi: Airports Authority of India (AAI) plans to put up aerobridges in 18 airports to facilitate hassle free movement of passengers from the aircraft to the terminal building. The project would cost Rs 120-crore. The identified locations for installation of aerobridges include non-metro airports such as Vadodra, Lucknow, Guwahati and Raipur.
“In the beginning five airports including Lucknow, Baroda and Guwahati would be provided with this but later it would be extended to 18 non-metro airports in the country. Within six months, after the contract for supply is awarded, all the 18 airports would have aerobridges,” said an AAI official.
Aerobridges connect the aircraft with the terminal hence enabling passengers to embark and disembark smoothly. At present, only five airports operated by AAI have aerobridges.
This comes at a time when the air passenger traffic in the country is growing at over 25%. While the major growth at present is concentrated in the six metros, non-metro cities such as Lucknow and Baroda are also expected to experience rapid growth.
