Patel plans to upgrade Akola airport

Nagpur: Even as the work on international cargo hub project goes on at a sluggish pace, civil aviation minister Praful Patel is paving the way to bring other cities of Vidarbha on aviation map.
After upgrading the airport in his home town Gondia, Patel is now proposing development of Akola airport. The airstrip in Akola, about 250 kms from Nagpur, has a 4,000 feet runway which is under the control of Airports Authority of India.
Now work is already underway to add another 600 feet to the other runway, renovate the existing terminal building and build a modern terminal building. Patel had discussed the plans to upgrade Akola airport with the airport officials in Nagpur last Friday, sources said.
Plans have been prepared to renovate the existing terminal building at a cost of Rs 1.5 crore. There is also a proposal to develop a Rs 15 crore modern terminal building plus a fire station, a air traffic control block and other vital installations.
