New radar system at Kolkata to guide planes

Kolkata: The city airport is set to get an advanced radar system within six months to streamline the movement of aircraft.
The technology — a powerful ground radar known as Advance Surface Movement Guidance & Control System — will guide aircraft through the maze of traffic in the apron area, said Airport Authority of India (AAI) sources.
The airport already has category II instrument landing system that allows better navigation in the air during adverse weather conditions.
"As flight operations increase, so will ground movement. Apart from aircraft, there are other vehicles constantly on the move to service flights. We are, therefore, planning to instal a low-range, high-intensity radar to track aircraft movement between the runway and parking bay," a source said.
AAI regional executive director (east) SPS Bakshi said the Rs 40-crore system was part of the development project for the airport.
