Nagpur: The airport’s second and non-operational runway will now be put to use for parking of planes.
The Airports Authority of India has decided to utilise the runway as a parking bay for Haj flights. Air India operates its own or takes on charter wide-bodied Boeing 747 planes for its Haj operations.
“A Boeing 747 occupies as many as four parking bays and will leave us with only two bays for other planes. Hence for the first time, we have decided to use the second runway for parking purposes,” said an airport official.
Nagpur airport controller S N Borkar told TOI, “We are making plans to handle 22,000 Haj pilgrims. Our new international arrival hall will be ready by October end. I have not yet received the flight schedule from Air India.” The Haj flights will commence in November.
