DIAL to cut cargo clearance time, exporters to suffer

New Delhi: The cost of importing and exporting goods through Indian airports is set to increase. The time for exporters and importers to keep goods at airports free of cost has been cut down. The move has highlighted the lack of regulatory oversight over airport tariffs, with a dispute erupting between Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL) and exporters.
With the GMR-promoted DIAL implementing the government's decision to reduce dwell time at airports by stipulating that all import cargo should cleared within three days, the trade is up in arms.
In case goods are not cleared within three days, storage charges would be levied. Earlier, this fee was not imposed on import cargo for the first five days after arrival at the Delhi airport.
While the first clash over storage charges has surfaced at Delhi airport, the decision is applicable to all airports across the country. In effect, cost of importing goods through other airports would also go up if consignments are not cleared within the reduced time-frame stipulated by airport operators.
