Bangalore: Kingfisher Airlines and Air Deccan are likely to combine with Abu Dhabi-based Gulf Aircraft Maintenance (Gamco) to set up a MRO (maintenance, repair and overhauling) facility.
Both the airlines currently have a technical understanding with Gamco for the maintenance of their Airbus aircrafts. But sources say this will now extend to establishing a MRO facility at a cost of between Rs 200 crore and Rs 400 crore.
Indications are that the facility will be located in Bangalore. The city is the hub for both the airlines. Earlier, Air Deccan and Kingfisher were in talks with Rajeev Chandrashekhar's Jupiter Aviation to set-up a $100 million MRO facility in Bangalore. Sources say this has been called off.
Plans and discussions are on between Indian carriers and foreign players to set up a total of 11 MRO facilities in the country. CAPA (Centre for Asia Pacific Aviation) estimates that in the next three years India would have a $1 billion MRO market.
