Kolkata: The main runway of NSCBI Airport was shut down for seven hours on Wednesday after tarmac inspectors detected a weak spot just ahead of the takeoff point. Flight operations, however, were not hampered.
Airports Authority of India (AAI) officials said the primary runway was shut down at 11 am. The secondary runway was in use till 6 pm, when the primary runway was again cleared for flight operations.
The ‘weakness’ was noticed early in the morning. The area was inspected and a decision taken to re-carpet the section after the rush-hour morning traffic. Sources, however, said the damaged spot had first been noticed on Saturday. Light carpeting was done to keep the runway operational but it wore out by Wednesday.
