AI chief seeks employees' support to improve performance

New Delhi: Days after state-run carrier Air India came under attack over major delays in several flights, its chief V Thulasidas on Thursday sought the support of employees in running the airline and said performance had suffered due to technical problems and inadequate pilot strength.
He blamed "misinformation" by competitors for showing the national carrier in a poor light, but said "the onus is thus entirely on us to ensure that we do not give them an opportunity by ensuring that all our flights operate on time".
Thulasidas made these observations days after almost ten Air India flights, mostly out of Delhi, were delayed by two to ten hours. Three AI staffers were also injured when some passengers allegedly entered into scuffle at the airline counter three days ago. In a letter addressed to all employees, the AI chairman and managing director said besides technical problems and inadequacy of pilots, external factors like weather (fog in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Amritsar), air traffic congestion and "instances of passengers refusing to vacate the aircraft or preventing our staff from checking in passengers of other flights" had also played a role in the delays.
