Sahnewal: Finally, after the span of two years, Sahnewal Airfield has resumed glider training for NCC Airwing cadets. This adventurous activity revived last week under the supervision of Captain Charanjeet Singh, Flight Commander and Glider Instructor, at Sahnewal Airport.
“Around 10 to 15 NCC Cadets of senior wing are trained daily free of cost. The senior cadets, mainly college students, are being trained while junior cadets, those who are in school, are exposed to it, just to motivate them for learning gliding,” said Captain Charanjeet Singh.
Gliding training was stopped in 2005 after the then instructor immigrated to Canada.
“We could not resume it last year due to some technical problems like proper servicing of gliders. Everything is up to mark now and we have two very good gliders,” said Captain Charanjeet Singh.
A few days back, Captian Digvijay Chauhan took over as trainer at the airfield.
After certain launches along with an instructor, each NCC cadet is being given a chance of solo gliding. It is after 40 to 50 solo launches that a cadet can apply for the Glider Pilot Licence, issued by Director General of Civil Aviation.
