Coimbatore airport expansion: ministry agrees to consider residents' plea

Coimbatore: Even as the relay-fast by the Chinniampalayam residents entered the ninth day here on Monday, the Civil Aviation Ministry is stated to have assured to consider the plea of the residents seeking not to displace them by going for land acquisition in the area for Coimbatore airport runway expansion.
This, after Coimbatore MP K Subbarayan (CPI) met the Union Minister of Civil Aviation Praful Patel in Delhi and submitted a memorandum on behalf of the people last Tuesday.
Praful Patel had directed the MP to meet V P Agarwal, Member, Planning, Airports Authority of India. So, subsequently, the MP along with his team from Coimbatore suggested to stop with the acquisition of 16 acres of land in Goldwins region and not to go ahead with the acquisition of land for expansion of airport runway in Chinniampalayam.
They also requested to look into the possibility of utilizing the large tract of vacant lands on the Southern side of the Airport for construction of additional runway or taxiway, new terminal buildings and to shift the entrance to the Airport through NH 47 (L&T Bypass), which, apart from several advantages, would provide enough area for future capacity addition and also will save the residential colonies, opined Subbarayan.
