Ex-AP minister held at Bangalore airport

Bangalore: Former Andhra Pradesh minister Mohammed Shakir was on Tuesday arrested at the Bangalore airport while trying to fly to Colombo with an invalid passport.
Shakir (58) was to board the 9:30 am Sri Lankan Airline flight to Colombo from where he was to take another flight to Mecca.
However, officials at the immigration counter found out that there was an LOC (Look Out Circular) on Shakir’s passport. On verifying, it was found that the former legislator’s passport bearing number F 9404850 was “invalid”.
Shakir, twice elected from Kadri constituency in Anantpur district of Andhra Pradesh, was an accused in a case of cheating Punjab National Bank to the tune of Rs 8.5 crore. The CBI which probed the case had seized his passport in 1998.
The passport expired in September 2006. At this point, Shakir got the passport reissued by claiming that he had lost his original passport.
