NRI dies as flight lands in Mumbai

Mumbai: An NRI from the US died from a heart attack on board a Jet Airways New York-Mumbai flight on Saturday morning. The deceased, Durlabbhai Patel,69, was a heart patient with diabetes and hypertension and had undergone two bypass surgeries in the past. The Patels live in Columbus, South Carolina.
Patel was on his two-month vacation to Navsari, Gujarat, and was travelling with his wife Parvatiben. “Around half-an-hour before landing, Patel went to the loo. When he came back, he started shivering and the airline doctor came to help him,” says Prakash Gandhi, a neighbour of Patel in Navsari. “The doctor gave him medical treatment but he died within 10-15 minutes,” he adds.
“Patel, a senior citizen, was a high-risk patient due to his medical history. At this age, the long travel coupled with transit movements leads to exertion which results in cardiovascular events like cardiac failure and death,” says Dr Ajay Chaurasia, professor and head of the cardiology department at Nair Hospital.
