Online fraud costs airline Rs 14 crore

New Delhi: A man who buys air tickets online is giving sleepless nights to Kingfisher Airlines. The carrier has complained to police that they have incurred losses worth Rs 14 crores over the past ten months and that the man has bought as many as 306 tickets through fraudulent means.
“We tracked passengers who travel using tickets purchased through forged credit cards and they said they have bought the tickets from a man called Vipin Kumar,” said Suraj Rao, regional manager of Kingfisher Airlines.
The carrier has even constituted an e-commerce team to monitor the fraud. Members of the team have traced the IP addresses of the computers from which these fraudulent transactions were made in Delhi from November, 2006, to September this year.
A case of cheating and criminal conspiracy has been registered at Palam airport police station. Five persons have been arrested in the case.
The airline claims the transactions involve some common e-mail addresses and phone numbers. Kingfisher employees have also told the police that the numbers did not belong to any of their agents or any International Air Transport Association (IATA) agent.
