Pune: Low-cost airline SpiceJet is expanding its fleet and focusing on costs to counter competition in a fast-consolidating Indian aviation sector. The airline, which also plans to connect to newer places, will induct a 212-seater Boeing 737-900 ER this month while three more will join its fleet in 2008, said executive chairman Siddhant Sharma. This will take the total aircraft strength to 22.
“We are inducting these aircraft to fly on slots where it is difficult to get time, and also to accommodate more people. These aircraft will be put to service on routes connecting Delhi, Goa, Mumbai and Ahmedabad. We currently fly to 17 destinations and will add Bagdogra (near Darjeeling) after the new aircraft come in,” he told ET in an interview.
