Airports alerted on hijack threat

Guwahati: All the airports in the North-eastern region and West Bengal have been put on high alert following a disturbing intelligence input that the militants might try to hijack a passenger airplane to make their presence felt. Highly placed official sources told The Assam Tribune that according to intelligence inputs, the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) hatched a plan in Bangladesh to hijack an aircraft from any of the airports in the North-east and a special team was assigned the task. But the details of the plan were not known to the security agencies.
Sources said that all the airports in the North-east have been put on high alert immediately after receiving the intelligence input, while, the Bagdogra and Kolkata airports have also been put on the alert as the security forces were not keen on taking any chance.
Though the security of all the airports is now looked after by the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), the other security agencies, including the State police forces, have been put on alert to foil any such attempt by the militants.
