Talks with Reyat collapse

Vancouver: Talks with Air India bomb maker Inderjit Singh Reyat have broken down and the B.C. government is moving ahead with plans for a perjury trial beginning Feb. 4, a well-informed source confirmed yesterday.
Mr. Reyat faces one count of perjury for allegedly misleading the court on 27 instances during testimony in 2003 at the trial of Vancouver businessman Ripudaman Singh Malik and Kamloops mill worker Ajaib Singh Bagri. If convicted, Mr. Reyat, 55, could be sentenced to a maximum of 14 years in prison.
A source told The Globe and Mail this week that Mr. Reyat had been offered a sentence in the range of two to five years in exchange for valuable information about others who were involved in the deadly scheme. A second source said he heard indirectly about the offer and was told that Mr. Reyat was cool to the proposal.
Geoff Gaul, a spokesman for Crown prosecutors, said yesterday discussions have been held with Mr. Reyat's defence lawyer in preparation for the trial but he refused to elaborate on their talks. The content of the discussions are confidential, Mr. Gaul said.
