Air NZ turns to India for hi-tech cargo system

Air New Zealand will replace its cargo management system with a multimillion-dollar "next generation" system, developed by Indian software firm IBS with the help of Air New Zealand and four other airlines.
The fully web-enabled, Java software system will handle the booking, pricing, billing and tracking of domestic and international air freight.
IBS says iCargo is designed to let airline customers track individual shipments over the Web and has been built to support the use of RFID chips or GPS transceivers to tag shipments.
Air New Zealand is only the third carrier to buy IBS' iCargo system, after Japanese carrier Nippon Airways and spin-off Nippon Cargo Airlines.
IBS, which employs 1800 staff, has spent 400 "man years" developing iCargo, which it is pitching to airlines as a replacement for legacy systems that are up to 40 years old.
Air New Zealand, along with Qantas, Australian Air Express, Gulf Air and South African Airways Cargo, helped IBS decide what features it should include and how it would work.
