Coming next: Kiosk check-ins at Mumbai airport

Mumabi: Come June and long queues at airport check-in counters could become a thing of the past. The Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport (CSIA) in Mumbai plans to install several self-service check-in kiosks that will allow passengers to select their seats and print their own boarding passes.
In a multi-million-dollar deal, Mumbai International Airport Ltd (MIAL) will outsource the development of the check-in system to Geneva-based airline IT services provider Sita, which will put up around 50 common use self-service (Cuss) kiosks, 20 of which will be located in hotels across Mumbai.
Sita will also deploy its back-end software through common use terminal equipment, starting April. The new system is expected to allow for faster check-ins at airports while facilitating remote check-ins.
The new system will benefit airlines as much as passengers. An International Air Transport Association (Iata) estimate suggests that even a 40% world market penetration of self-service kiosks would help airlines generate around $1bn in yearly savings.
