Day One: Flights grounded, but airport staff takes off

Pune: The Day One of the closure of Pune airport left a deserted look on the premises. There were no passengers, no one at booking office and the vehicle parking lot drew a blank. No flights took off. However, officials of Airports Authority of India (AAI) looked a lot busy. “We are taking this opportunity to clear our backlog,” said an official.
The airline companies are using these 15-day period for maintenance of equipment and staff training. Some staffer have planned holidays. But AAI staff is all geared up to do some hard work.
“We will clear backlog, which is piling up,” said J P Mathur, deputy general manager, Pune airport. “Our offices will be on full fledged in this period. We have to do some maintenance work like repairing of trollies and X-ray machines. Besides that we will be clearing the pending paper work regarding various things,” he said.
