Airport staffs to call off agitation if govt reviews stand

Kolkata: Leaders of the agitating workers at NSC Bose International Airport here said they would withdraw the agitation if the government is willing to review its stand on airport privatisation.
"The Central government is adamant in its stand. If it is willing to review its position, we are ready to withdraw the agitation," said Pathik Bhattacharya, vice president of CITU-backed Airports Authority of India Employees Union (AAIEU) which has called "indefinite noncooperation" since midnight.
However, flight operations at the airport here was not affected due to the "indefinite noncooperation" call.
"We are not against the privatisation of airports but that should not be done at the cost of the existing airports and its employees' jobs," Bhattacharya said.
Claiming that all the 2,000 Airports Authority of India non-executive employees here were participating in the agitation, Bhattacharya said they would not prevent any passenger from entering or leaving the airport.
