Flights Operate Normally, Unaffected by Strike

Jet Airways (India) Ltd., the nation's biggest carrier, and other airlines operated their flights on schedule, unaffected by an airport workers strike that began today.
``There is no inconvenience to passengers,'' said T. Premnath, a general manager at the Airports Authority of India, which runs most of the nation's airports. ``Airports throughout the country are functioning normally,'' he said in a phone interview in New Delhi.
The Airports Authority's employees union is striking work to oppose a government plan to shut existing airports in the southern Indian cities of Bangalore and Hyderabad as new facilities are ready to open. The union wants the old airports to continue operations.
Deccan Aviation Ltd., the nation's biggest budget airline, said its schedules weren't affected by the strike, according to a statement by the Bangalore, India-based carrier.
The Indian government said the workers non-cooperation didn't amount to a strike and that measures would be taken to keep flights running on time.
The Indian Air Force has deployed 479 personnel to 21 airports, including New Delhi, Mumbai and Hyderabad to help cope with any disruptions, spokesman Mahesh Upasani said in New Delhi today. The air force personnel will help airport staff on ``safety services,'' he said.
