Mumbai: “Driver still missing, his identity unknown” - that is the shocking status of the investigation 13 days after a helper at the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport’s cargo complex was killed when a heavy container fell on him after it was hit by an airline coach.
Worse, the probe so far has exposed some glaring lacunae in systems and procedures governing workers, equipment and vehicles at one of the country’s busiest and highly guarded airports. Fifty-year-old Dyaneshwar Kunte’s death in the wee hours of March 30 was registered at the Sahar police station as “accidental”. Almost two weeks later, police admit that investigations are at a standstill even after they have thoroughly questioned drivers, helpers, airline employees, security staff and even employees of Cambata Aviation, Kunte’s employers.
While Senior Inspector Dilip Patil said that the questioning had yielded little, investigating officer, Inspector P Jadhav, said the probe would continue.
But the fact that national carrier Air India did not have a register or logbook of coach drivers, according to Assistant Commissioner of Police (Airport Zone) Janardhan Garje, has raised several eyebrows.
