Airport mishap: AI coach driver yet to be arrested

Mumbai: Almost 48 hours after an employee of a ground handling agency at Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport died after being crushed by a container, the driver of the Air India coach that knocked the container over is still to be arrested.
While Senior Inspector S K Patil of the Sahar airport police station admitted that the name of the driver has been obtained from the coach-driver roster of the airline, he refused to reveal the driver’s identity.
“The investigation is under progress and I cannot talk until it is over,” said Patil.
In the wee hours of Sunday, Dnyaneshwar Appa Kunte (40) died on the tarmac at Bay 49 of the airport while unloading cargo from a Kenya Airways flight.
The driver of the Air India shuttle, taking advantage of the darkness and the numerous exits, abandoned the coach and escaped soon after the incident.
Assistant Commandant of the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) Sanjay Prakash said: “There are as many as 50 points of exit at the airport and there is no checking done when one leaves the airport premises.”
