The vast expanse of land, vacant at some stretch and masked with green cover at other places, on way to the Bangalore International Airport at Devanahalli may look picturesque to an occasional traveller, but for the BIAL staff and employees of the various airlines, it's a sight of bleakness.
BIAL's vision to develop the region as 'Airport City' seems to be distant dream at present.
In the absence of any concrete signs of development that could facilitate decent living in the area, the employees are left with no choice but to travel all the way to the City for accommodation and basic needs. There is no shopping complex close by and one has to go to Yelahanka New Town, which is 18 kms away, to even buy grocery.
There are no street lights after Hebbal flyover till the airport and the BBMP in liaison with the National Highway authorities is yet to commence work on lighting the way.
Geethika, working as a ground staff for a private airline, stays in a PG accommodation. ``My search for a similar kind of accommodation near the new airport didn't yield results. I'm contemplating changing my line,'' she says.
Says Sneha Subramoney, air hostess with Lufthansa, ``I board the flight to Frankfurt post midnight. From the city hotel, it will now take me two hours to reach the airport. My sleep time will be reduced as the wake up call will come two hours early. I will be tired and sleepy on the flight. On my off days, when official transport is not there, finding transport to and from the airport will be tough and expensive.''
