MIAL seeks court permission to remove Purulia aircraft

Mumbai: The ongoing development process at the Mumbai International Airport is being hampered by legal hurdles over the Russian built AN-26, the aircraft used in the Purulia arms drop case in 1995.This is the contention of a fresh letter sent by MIAL to Kolkata High Court, in which it seeks the court’s permission to auction the aircraft which is occupying considerable space in the Mumbai airport.
“Even earlier we have got other aircraft removed like the NEPC Airlines plane. We got the permission from the Chennai High Court,” said a MIAL spokesperson.
MIAL has submitted an application to the Kolkata High Court seeking permission for the removal of the aircraft, as it is no more airworthy. The company plans to build a new taxi way on the space presently occupied by the aircraft.
The arms drop case hit headlines in 1995 when the aircraft under Peter Bleach and the other main accused Kim Davis was caught dropping arms over West Bengal’s Purulia district, 205 kilometers from the state capital Kolkata.
