No-fly zone status for all N-sites?

New Delhi: The ever-increasing security threat to Indian nuclear establishments could lead to almost all of them being declared no-fly zones to avoid the possibility of any plane crashing into them in a repeat of the 9/11 attack.
National Security Adviser M K Narayanan is learnt to have written to the Prime Minister's Office to consider a no-fly zone status for these sensitive establishments, a copy of which was sent to the aviation ministry for technical evaluation recently.
The aviation ministry is now considering this issue, which was originally raised around three years ago and has been reactivated at the highest quarters.
At present, only the Tarapur Atomic Power Station in Maharashtra comes under a no-fly zone. Atomic power plants are already functional in places like Kalpakkam near Chennai; Rawatbhata near Kota; Narora in UP; Kakrapar near Surat and Kaiga in Karnataka. In addition, another plant is coming up at Kudankulam in Tamil Nadu. And, of course, Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) is a sensitive multidisciplinary nuclear research centre in Mumbai.
