No more lounging around for pvt carriers?

New Delhi: Private airlines may not enjoy for long the luxury of reducing the size of passenger waiting lounges at their disposal at airports across the country by removing seats and renting out the space to earn extra revenue.
If the Centre accepts the recommendation of the parliamentary standing committee related to the ministry of transport, tourism and culture, which called for increasing the ambit of the role of Airports Economic Regulatory Authority (AERA) from regulating revenue earnings from aeronautical services (landing and services relating to management of flight operations) to include non-aeronautical services, then private airlines may not have a free hand in the commercial exploitation of the space given to them at airports.
The committee, which presented its 132, 133 and 134 reports in the Rajya Sabha today sought to “provide for the establishment of an Airport Economic Regulatory Authority to regulate tariff and other charges for the aeronautical services” at airports through the AERA Bill, 2007.
