New Delhi: In a recent development, the government has announced plans of deputing an independent regulatory body for the aviation industry by year end. The proposed body will be formed with the main objective of regulating matters relating to the much debated User Development Fee (UDF), Passenger Service Fee, aeronautical charges and other airport related issues. It will be a completely autonomous body and separate from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).
Talking to TravelBiz Monitor, Ashok Chawla, Secretary, Civil Aviation, said, “We are trying to work on this matter and will get the new regulatory body in place as soon as possible. The matter is currently with the Parliamentary Standing Committee on aviation, which will make a report and suggest necessary changes. Once that is done, we will see which changes are acceptable to us and send it to the Cabinet. Subsequently, the Ministry of Law will incorporate the relevant changes and a bill will then be passed in the Parliament, post which it will be finally formed. This entire process will take around six months.”
The new body will manage and regulate issues related to tariffs, security and safety and land management in all major airports in the country.
