No Air India flight to London till May 24

Ahmedabad: The ongoing expansion work on the runway of the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport has affected the landing and takeoff of big aircraft like Boeing and Jumbo, forcing Air India to cancel its direct flight from Ahmedabad to London from Wednesday.
“The flight AI 133 will remain cancelled till Saturday,” an AI official told Newsline. He added that the flight, which was scheduled to depart at 10.35 am on Wednesday, was cancelled owing to the construction work at the airport. “Due to the expansion work, the space available on the runway is not adequate for landing and take off of big aircraft (with a passenger capacity of 450),” he said.
Though airport director BP Bhagat could not be contacted despite several attempts, a junior official confirmed that the expansion work was on and it would take a few more days to complete it.
According to the official, 49 of the 75 passengers, who had booked their tickets for the Wednesday flight, were informed in advance about the cancellation. An arrangement of an alternate flight was made for them to fly to Mumbai. From there, they were accommodated in another flight for their onward journey to London. The rest of the passengers could not be informed, as they had not given their personal phone numbers. All of them have been booked on other flights to London from Mumbai, the officials added.
