'Talks on to keep old Bangalore airport in service'

NEW DELHI: Demands to keep Bangalore's old HAL airport operational even after inauguration of the modern one at Devanahalli - 40 km from the city - did not get any assurance from the Centre on Monday, as it only informed the SC that discussions on the issue were on.
Additional solicitor general Gopal Subramaniam informed a bench comprising Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan and Justice M K Sharma that the court should leave the decision to the Centre.
"Negotiations are afoot with the private builder - Bangalore International Airport Ltd (BIAL). There is no need to make any suggestion or reference on this issue to the government as demanded by the petitioners. We will take into account all pros and cons," Subramaniam said.
The bench agreed with the Centre and said in its order disposing of the petitions filed by NGO ‘Bangalore City Connect’ and one G R Mohan that the Union of India and the Airports Authority of India (AAI) would act in accordance with the directions of the Karnataka HC.
