AI unions want former CMD Thulasidas role probed

Mumbai: A newly formed umbrella body of trade unions of Air India has sought a CBI probe against former CMD V Thulasidas alleging misuse of power by him during his tenure, a charge denied by him.
The Federation of NACIL Employees Union, comprising four organisations, has shot off a letter to Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel and also sought the setting up of a Parliamentary committee to look into the "merger" and losses suffered by the two erstwhile state-owned carriers.
When contacted for his reaction, Thulasidas dismissed the charges as "wild" and said "it is wrong to say that Air India has incurred losses due to the merger. Even in 2006-07, when the merger had not taken place, AI and Indian Airlines both suffered losses".
He said the merger had been opposed by the unions but "it was the decision of the government".
The Federation, in its letter, had said "in recent days, the misuse of power by the past CMD has made national headlines".
"His aircraft leasing policy, over-ambitious aircraft acquisition plan, failure to train pilots to fly these aircraft, the loss-making (Boeing) 777-LR fiasco, transfer of routes, Ritu Beri uniforms... all must be scrutinised, investigated and revisited," it added.
