New Delhi: The Union government has stepped in to resolve a controversy between the Bangalore International Airports Ltd. (BIAL) — the operators of the new Bangalore airport — and low-cost carrier Indigo airlines over ground-handling at the new Bangalore greenfield airport.
The BIAL has denied allegations that it has barred Indigo airlines from conducting its own ground-handling on the grounds that it (Indigo) had low market share.
"The allegation is false. We have only asked Indigo not to conduct ground-handling on the restricted airside of the airport. We do not want too many ground-handling agencies and we have made the request to other airlines too," a BIAL spokesperson told this newspaper. Civil aviation ministry official sources said that the ministry has asked BIAL to adhere to the government’s ground-handling policy in view of the controversy. The directorate-general of civil aviation (DGCA), the regulator in the civil aviation sector, has also written to BIAL on the issue. DGCA sources said that any failure by BIAL to obey the DGCA directives could even result in cancellation of the airport operator’s licence.
