Finally, a lead on Oct 2006 passport theft

Chandigarh: Almost two years after 48 passports went missing from the Regional Passport Office in Sector 34 here, the Chandigarh Police claimed to have got the first clue of the theft.
On May 10 this year, the Amritsar police had arrested two people who were reportedly deported from Singapore with forged passports. It has been found that the confiscated passports belong to the series of passports that was stolen from the RPO in Chandigarh on October 31, 2006.
The two arrested, Sukhwant Kumar and Raj Kumar, were brought to Chandigarh from Amritsar today and have been remanded in custody for five days. Calling the arrest just the tip of the iceberg, the police said there is a lot more to be uncovered in the case.
Immediately after the theft was reported in October 2006, the Chandigarh police had flashed messages and issued instructions to all the airports in the country. It still remains a mystery as to how the two managed to reach Singapore and clear all checks in India on the basis of the fake passports.
SP City, Amritsar, S S Mann, however, said the two never reached Singapore. They were arrested on May 10 at Raja Sansi International Airport during an immigration check, he said.
