Heavy rainfall since Monday evening rendered nearly 700 taxis immobile at Mumbai airport. As a result, the pre-paid counter was closed for almost 12 hours and passengers had to walk almost a km to catch a cab, a rickshaw or a bus.
Cabbies at the airport blamed Mumbai International Airport Limited (Mial) for not cleaning the drain near the parking at terminal 2A, which caused waterlogging till 3pm on Tuesday.
Ratan Shah, 42, who arrived in Air India’s Abu Dhabi flight on Tuesday morning had to walk with his luggage till the Sahar signal to catch a taxi. “When I went to the pre-paid counter, it was closed and no cabs were available,” said Shah. “The rickshaw drivers at the airport refused to take passengers, as they were afraid of waterlogging.”
Many other passengers had to either walk or call a private cab. “Taxis at the terminal 2A parking were rendered immobile due to waterlogging,” said Kanhaiya Singh, president, Mumbai Airport Taxi Rickshaw Union.
