Heroin worth Rs 10 cr seized at BIA

Bangalore: In one of its biggest operations, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) busted an international drug trade that used Bengaluru International Airport as a transit point.
Additional director general DRI R Venkataraman said two foreigners were arrested and heroin worth over Rs 10 crore in the international market was confiscated.
The first consignment was confiscated from a 23-year-old Thai girl, Khaektet Thitaree, who had concealed it in a bag. The second one was Shabani Salemani (36) of Tanzania, who was carrying 65 capsules of heroin in his body.
The operation was conducted while they were about to board a Malaysian Airlines flight at 12.50 am on Thursday. Thitaree was intercepted after a scrutiny of her two checked-in baggage showed 2.08 kg of heroin hidden in a false bottom.
The contraband is valued at about Rs 7 crore. Thitaree travelled from New Delhi to Bangalore on Wednesday and had scheduled to take a connecting flight to Kuala Lumpur. During interrogation, Thitaree said she was a student and had come to India for a short visit. She also had $2,000 in cash and a free flight ticket from a person who she met in New Delhi. Selemani, who had already boarded the same flight, was intercepted along with his cabin baggage.
Selemani said he was carrying 65 capsules of heroin in his body. He was admitted to a hospital and the capsules extracted.
