Kingfisher airline is all set to operate a hopping Mumbai–Nashik–Bangalore flight in the next 15 days.
Lack of an air service to and from Nashik has been a major hurdle in the fast growth of the city. There has been a long pending demand from citizens and industry. Many industries had shifted their focus away from Nashik citing 'lack of air connectivity' as one of the reasons.
Two airlines had started their services in the past in Nashik. Vayudoot operated a flight 20 years ago. Air Deccan also operated one three years ago. However, the attempts did not succeed due to sustainability of the air operator, the distance of airport and timing of the flights.
Nashik has two airstrips, one belonging to the Combat Army Aviation Training School in Gandhinagar and the other to Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) in Ojhar. While the Gandhinagar airstrip lies between Nashik and its suburb Nashik Road, the Ojhar airstrip is 17 km away from the city.
Air Deccan operated its flights from Ojhar, there was a demand for a flight from Gandhinagar. The time of the flight to Mumbai in the afternoon was not suitable.
