Ranchi: Less than a year after an emergency medical unit at Birsa Munda Airport was inaugurated, doctors have attended close to 2,500 patients, most of them air passengers.
P.K. Sinha, the first doctor to be posted here along with three nursing staff, said, “We treat not only passengers but also employees, including the family and children of Airports Authority of India (AAI) and CISF staff.”
The unit has two well-equipped rooms with oxygen cylinders, BP machine, Umbo bag, manually operated artificial respirator, an automatic blood sugar testing analyser and cardiac beds and normal beds.
Emergency drugs are always stored, thanks to the supply maintained by AAI officials. Besides, an ambulance is also stationed at the airport.
Sinha said they were hoping that the state government would also provide them with a modern ECG machine. Doctors and medical staff are available at the unit from 6.30am to 7.30pm.
Sinha said his colleagues — M.K. Mitra and Vandana Bharati — and he had treated about 700 patients last year while this year the number had already gone up to 1,600.
