Kolkata: A-Mumbai based businessman was stopped by airline staff at the Kolkata airport on Sunday for carrying a bottle of acid. Sailesh Khatri (45) smashed the bottle on the floor in a fit of rage, injuring two of the staffers after the acid splattered on them.
Around 12.30 pm, security officials of IndiGO airlines detected a bottle containing some liquid in Khatri’s registered baggage. Khatri was supposed to board a flight to Delhi. On opening the bag, officials found that it was a 750-ml bottle of glycolic acid, a highly corrosive acid.
According to rules formulated by Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS), passengers are not allowed to carry acids, be it in hand baggage or registered baggage.
The security staff stopped Khatri, telling him that he could not carry it. This sparked off an argument. The businessman smashed the bottle on the ground in a fit of rage, injuring IndiGO employees Bittu Choudhury and Mahinder when the acid splashed on them. The two injured airline employees were rushed to the medical room and given first aid.
Khatri was not allowed to board the flight and CISF handed him over to the local police. IndiGO officials lodged an FIR against him with the airport police.
