New Delhi: Proposals for new greenfield airports at Jhajjar in Haryana and Greater Noida, besides 14 other places are yet to take off, despite the government clearing the greenfield airport policy April 24.The Ministry of Civil Aviation in a statement Tuesday said the Airports Authority of India (AAI) has completed site inspections but the proposal for “in principle” approval is yet to be forwarded by the promoter. The most crucial of these proposals relate to the Jhajjar and Greater Noida airports, which are close to the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport here. These airports, less than 150 km from the IGI airport, would be examined on a case-by-case basis by the government as per the norms in the greenfield airport policy.
In case of an application to establish an airport within 150 km of an existing airport, the proposal would first be considered by the steering committee that would take into account all relevant facts and contractual liabilities. The committee would then submit its recommendations to the aviation ministry, which would decide whether to grant approval or not, government sources said.
Till date, only two greenfield international airports - one in Hyderabad in Andhra Pradesh (commissioned March 23), and the other in Bangalore in Karnataka (commissioned May 24) have become operational.
