Chandigarh: A resident of Gujarat was arrested from the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport in Mumbai on Thursday for possessing and travelling on one of the 48 passports stolen from the Chandigarh RPO office in October 2007. The accused, Inder Patel, was coming from New York on the passport.
UT Police have taken transit remand from the Mumbai court and the team is expected to reach the city by Saturday. Deputy Superintendent of Police (Crime) K I P Singh said: “Patel was arrested by the crime branch while he was checking out of the airport terminal.”
Patel had gone to the US in June 2008 after getting a visa through a travel agent in Gujarat. “It seems he was unaware that the passport was stolen. The travel agent arranged the passport and visa for him after taking Rs 25 lakh,” said a Mumbai police officer.
According to sources, Patel was arrested by the US authorities soon after he landed there six months ago. “Now, he has been deported back to India,” said a Crime Branch Official.
Alleged kingpin of the passport theft case, Gurjinder Singh alias Lucky (34), was arrested by the Crime Branch in October 2008.
