Kandahar hijack: Panel stays order on relief for passengers

New Delhi: The National Consumer Commission today stayed the order of Delhi consumer panel directing the Indian Airlines to pay Rs one lakh each to all passengers of the ill-fated IC 814 flight which was hijacked to Kandahar in Afghanistan in 1999.
"The revision petition has been admitted and the operation of the impugned order is stayed," the Commission Bench headed by Justice R K Batta said, admitting the plea of the state-owned Indian Airlines against the order.
The Bench also issued notice to Ashok Gupta and his wife who had approached the State Consumer Commission.
"The order of the state commission is erroneous as compensation has been awarded to those persons who were not even party to the petition filed before it," Shiv Kumar Suri, appearing for the public carrier, submitted before the Commission.
He also submitted that the state panel did not consider the order of apex commission while deciding the couple's plea.
Nine years after the hijacking of IC 814 flight to Kandahar in Afghanistan, the Delhi Consumer Commission had in December last directed the public carrier to pay Rs one lakh each as compensation to all passengers on board the aircraft.
