ITDC, Flemingo contest Coimbatore Airport duty free contract

The re-issued tender for duty free contracts at six regional Indian airports attracted a lacklustre response with no bids for four of the locations – Amritsar, Trivandrum, Jaipur and Lucknow airports.
Flemingo is set to be awarded the Pune Airport concession after it was the only bidder. Flemingo and state-owned ITDC were the two bidders for the Coimbatore Airport contract. Financial bids will be opened soon by tendering body Airports Authority of India.
The original tender, which closed in August 2008, failed to attract any bids. The deadline was then extended to 25 September and was subsequently extended to 29 December.
The relatively small spaces on offer, and the low levels of traffic, meant that the major international duty free concessionaires were not initially attracted. In the latest re-issued tender Airports Authority of India allowed for additional space at certain airports, and included the duty free operation at Amritsar under the new terms.
But potential bidders appear to have been deterred by the tough economic and aviation climates in India. Passenger traffic at Trivandrum, for example, was down by -29% year-on-year in October with Amritsar down by -15%. Worse figures are expected for November and December.
