Mumbai airport to get new taxiway by Jan-end

Mumbai: The city airport is all set to inaugurate its new taxiway N10 this month. The taxiway, which would be located at the end of runway 27, has come up in place of taxiway Delta, which was discontinued a couple of years ago. The work was almost over and the taxiway would be ready for use soon, officials said.
The airport opened taxiway N9 for use only two months ago and it, too, was seen as a major step in reducing the runway occupancy time of the aircraft.
"The taxiway will be in use soon,'' a Mumbai International Airport Pvt Ltd (MIAL) spokesperson said. However, the official did not specify the date when it would be opened for air traffic.
Apart from the taxiway, the airport has also inaugurated three new parking bays for aircrafts-55 , 55A and 55B. The bays are located in terminal 2C and are close to the Air India hangar. They are a replacement for the five bays which were pulled down by MIAL last year for renovation.
Though taxiway N9 was seen as a major addition to the airport infrastructure, N10 is likely to help wide-bodied aircraft . "Since it is located at the end of the runway, most aircraft won't use it much. However, bigger aircraft or those needing a long run-up before take-off would benefit from the taxiway,'' said an air traffic controller.
Many a time, an aircraft lands at a higher speed and goes beyond the normal point of landing. In such a situation , it has to normally make a U-turn to vacate the runway.
