DIAL to conduct extensive ORAT trials at new Domestic Departure Terminal I D at IGI Airport

New Delhi: Minister of Civil Aviation Praful Patel yesterday inaugurated the new Domestic Departure Terminal I D at Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport in the capital in the presence of Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dixit. The terminal will be operational by the first week of April 2009, informed G M Rao, Group Chairman, GMR while speaking at the inauguration function. Rao further added that Terminal I D will raise domestic departure capacity of IGIA to ten million passengers per annum. Speaking at the inauguration, Patel said that IGI Airport was an environmental friendly airport with world-class facilities and will provide employment opportunities for youth. He also urged cooperation of Delhi government and various ministries for making Delhi airport greener.
Prior to commencement of operation, Delhi International Airport (P) Ltd (DIAL), which is a GMR Group-led Joint Venture consortium, will conduct extensive Operational Readiness and Airport Transfer (ORAT) trials at the new Departure Terminal ID. The main objective of the trial is to prepare all airport stakeholders including the airport operators, airlines, baggage and ground handlers and security agencies such as the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) for the shift of operation to the new terminal. Besides, it will ensure smooth airport operation and comfort travel to passengers.
The new terminal has been developed in the interest of passengers and not in accordance with agreement with the Government of India. It has been mainly built to enhance passenger capacity in the wake of the Commonwealth Games which will be held in the capital form October 3-14, 2010, informed Kiran Kumar Grandhi, Chairman-Airports, GMR Group who was present at the function.
