New terminal building at Surat airport inaugurated

Surat: After making Surat airport capable of handling around 200 domestic flights per day, Airport Authority of India (AAI) has embarked upon the task to plan its future, which includes setting up of cargo facilities and additional runways, in the next few years.
"There is still some work to be done on Surat airport. We want to turn it into an international airport by setting up additional runways and cargo facilities," said AAI chairman V P Agarwal at the inauguration of new terminal building of Surat airport on Friday.
AAI has demanded additional 864 hectare of land from Gujarat government to set up new infrastructure at the airport. The allocation of additional land will decide the future development like cargo facilities, runways etc, he added.
On improving domestic connectivity, Agarwal said, "Some of the flight operators have shown their interest to commence services on some sectors from Surat. There is possibility of the city getting connectivity to more airports in the country."
Union civil aviation minister Praful Patel cancelled his visit to Surat due to some unavoidable circumstances. Hence, Union minister of state for petroleum Dinsha Patel inaugurated the swanky terminal building.
