Gandhinagar: The proposed second international airport at Ahmedabad is inching closer to takeoff with the Centre learnt to have given airspace clearance to 1,690 hectare area reserved at Fedara, 85 km from Ahmedabad.
Sources told TOI that Union civil aviation minister Praful Patel has already cleared the file on airspace clearance based on which details of landing and takeoff of planes can be worked out for the project.
The airspace clearance follows talks held by Gujarat government officials with Airport Authority of India officials, including its technical and financial directors, during the Vibrant Gujarat summit. “The clearance means the proposed site is not an obstruction to the existing airport at Hansol in Ahmedabad. As per international norms, airspace clearance is a must for any airport project to take off,” a senior official said.
Airspace clearance is based on specifications laid down by Jeppesen, an American subsidiary of Boeing Commercial Airplanes, which specialises in aeronautical charting and navigation services, flight planning, pilot supplies and aviation training. “The existing Ahmedabad airport has a 11,000-feet runway, making it uncomfortable to land Airbus-380. However, the Fedra airport has space for two runways of 12,000-feet each, putting it on the international map for Airbus-380s,” the official explained.
