DGCA plans to separate safety inspection related functions

New Delhi: The Directorate General of Civil Aviation is preparing a roadmap to separate tasks of safety inspection and accident investigation from its regulatory functions, official sources said today.
The move comes in the wake of problems relating to the fast-growing aviation sector in the country as well as strong recommendations from global and Indian bodies that an independent agency be created expeditiously for the purpose.
The proposed agency, the sources said, should carry out inspections and audit of all safety-related activities of all players in the sector, including air transport operators, airport operators and air navigation service providers.
Such an agency should also be vested with the responsibility of accident investigations, according to the recommendations.
DGCA, at present, is assigned to carry out all safety functions of the Airports Authority of India through its Aerodrome Standards Directorate. As an interim measure, it is using AAI's manpower to carry out safety oversight functions.
