Chennai: To facilitate expansion work in the area around the Kamaraj domestic arrival terminal, the Airports Authority of India (AAI) will shift the domestic arrival to the Anna International terminal by the end of the month.
An 8,000 square metre area on the ground floor in Phase Three at the Anna International arrival terminal, where renovation work is nearing completion, is being made ready to accommodate the domestic arrival hall with four slant-type baggage conveyor belts. The area has been partitioned and, when ready, will be exclusively used for domestic passengers.
"The domestic arrival is being shifted to facilitate construction of a new domestic terminal as well as a flyover that will come in front of the airport terminals," said airport director K Natarajan, who inspected renovation works that are nearing completion in Phase Three of the Anna International terminal.
"The space will be used to handle domestic arrival till the end of the year. The new arrival facility will be much more spacious than the existing one at the domestic terminal. The existing arrival is just 2,000 square metres in area while the new space in the international terminal building will be 8,000 square metres," he said, adding, "The arrival hall was being renovated for use of international passengers but it will now be used to handle domestic passengers because of airport expansion works."
AAI has retained in the arrival hall all facilities required to handle international passengers, such as customs and immigration kiosks, and offices for customs and other departments. The terminal is being developed on the lines of integrated terminals that are capable of handling domestic as well as international passengers, as smaller airports do.
